Challenging start

This year started with a very wet few weeks due to Cyclone Gabriele. It was very destructive for many up north. So far, we were lucky that none of our people was affected directly.

As with all serious challenges, we must try not to stress out, pick ourselves up and face the future with a positive attitude. We know that unrelenting stress can lead to serious psychological and physiological problems. It is scientifically proven that stress can be most effectively decreased through meditation, yoga, Tai Chi Chuan and exercise. The results are the best when the activity is enjoyed by the individual.

Our Shao Chi Chuan training should fit the bill very well, as it trains us to stay calm, and focused on our body and the objectives of the drills. The stretching exercises can improve our flexibility and help with relaxation both physically and mentally. Training the dynamic combinations, speed-distance-timing & reaction-power-focus drills will provide both aerobic and anaerobic exercise for combat fitness and mental health.

Training Objectives

It is important that we review our main training objectives besides maintaining good health.

The first and foremost is efficient self-defence. We are not bound by techniques that are just traditional and have unnecessary flourishes without worthwhile conditioning or combat functions.

Secondly, our training must be sustainable without suffering unnecessary contact injuries, such as brain, bone and soft tissue injuries, as well as repetitive stress injuries to our joints. It should also not generate traumatic mental stress for students.

Thirdly, It should be practical for students of all sizes, gender and ages. Techniques should not only work for young, big and strong students. Our older students are not required to do acrobatics.

Fourthly, our training is not just about fighting ability. We work hard on personal development, cultivating a focused mind that is peaceful and calm under pressure. We practice determination, patience, self-confidence, tolerance and respect.

The most important thing is to have the habit of training regularly. Regular and focused training will develop the feeling necessary for making gradual adjustments to improve. It is only when you train regularly that flexibility, health & fitness targets can be achieved.

Your ability to defend yourself when you are under attack depends on how well you respond to it. To use the appropriate techniques to protect yourself and disable your assailant, you have to repeat and refine the moves many hundreds of times, till it becomes a reflex action.
